VERNACULAR is an exhibition of works by Karen Caruana and curated by Sabrina Calleja Jackson illustrating a nostalgic walk through the current evidence of our country’sdevelopment. These dreamy yet realistic oil paintings characterize a wish to stay in a better past and a direct sensitivity towards a questionable future. The representation of made up spaces vs existing spaces is evident in Caruana’s work which helps to portray her interest towards the comparisons between mind and matter and how these two important aspects work together.

Artist Bio:

Karen Caruana is a Malta-based fine artist and illustrator. She has been studying Fine Art since 2001, works mainly with painting and is mostly intrigued by colour, form, facial expressions, and captured movement. Most of the time, she works through a painting with the aim to understand and indirectly tackle personal struggles along the whole process, using visual imagery as a ritual or confession to reach out to herself and sometimes others.  Karen works as a full-time artist and is currently producing work for her first solo show.
