The Valletta Cultural Agency is hosting an Introduction to Classical Music Criticism workshop as well as a Masterclass in the same field, by acclaimed classical music critic Dott. Umberto Nicoletti Altimari from Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.
Introduction to Classical Music Criticism
This open workshop is targeted at all those who have an appreciation of classical music and who would be interested in developing their critical writing skills in this field.
Masterclass in Classical Music Criticism
This masterclass is targeted at all those who are trained/specialising in music and music criticism, and would therefore be expected to submit a review/criticism of a performance of their choice as part of their application.

This initiative forms part of the Agency’s collaboration with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra on the Mahler’s Sixth project, which culminates in a concert on the 14th of March 2020 at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.
About the Critic
Born in Rome in 1960, after having studied History of Music at university, Umberto Nicoletti Altimari started working with RAI (Radiodue and Radiotre), with the Festival dei due Mondi di Spoleto (where, for 10 years, he worked hand in hand with the founder and Artistic Director, Gian Carlo Menotti and curated the music programme of the festival), with the Corriere della Sera as a music critic and finally with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia since the beginning of the 1990s for specific projects and from 2007 onwards as a collaborator for the artistic direction of the same Accademia.
Mr. Nicoletti Altimari has also served as artistic consultant and critic for a number of artistic initiatives, such as the Festival internazionale di Arte e Musica Sacra di Roma and other music events in Italy. He has published several articles on a number of specialised review magazines and journals, starting from the Nuova Rivista Italiana di Musicologia, programme booklets for several prestigious festivals and venues (Festival di Spoleto, Panatenee Pompeiane, Accademia Filarmonica Romana, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma) and essays as part of conferences and music roundtables.
