“…………. and always the sea” is an art exhibition on show at the Malta Society of Arts from the 4th of February in Valletta consists solely of paintings in pastel which all include the sea as an ingredient. In fact the Exhibition is called “…and always the sea.” Joe Spiteri Staines, the artist involved is showing thirty paintings painted over the last few years. Malta’s blue, ever present in the sea and in the sky is very well captured and the fact that his painting medium is pastel helps him in doing this. Pastel is not such a popular medium with artists in Malta but the artist’s skill in using this medium demonstrates an admirable technique and the vivid and brilliant colours achieved are difficult to arrive at in other media. His paintings impart a sense of peacefulness and tranquility which perhaps reflect the artist’s character and personality. These paintings emphasize the beauty of the Maltese islands and particularly the area around St Julians Bay as many of the paintings consist of views of this bay from different angles and vantage points and at different times of day. The exhibition is being held in aid of a good cause. All proceeds from sales will be donated to Aid to the Church in Need. The exhibition will remain open up to 4th March. Times of viewing are 9am to 7pm on weekdays and 9 am to 12 Noon on Saturdays.
