VARIATIONS ON EMERGENCE: MSA x ACM RESIDENCY CLOSING EVENT

Join us on Friday 12 December 2025 at 8pm for the final sharing event of Variations of Emergence, the MSA x ACM artist residency programme. Artists Nina Gerada and Martina Georgina, our resident artists for 2025 will be sharing their research process and material that they have developed over the course of the residency period.

Nina Gerada has spent her residency, ‘Collecting Embodiment’ – reconnecting after twenty-two years away from Malta. By walking the islands’ coastlines, engaging with traditional crafts, and gathering materials, she explores themes of embodiment, memory, and ancient knowledge, while reflecting on how these connect to motherhood. The sharing brings together an evolving collection of material tests, found objects, and photography that trace a dialogue between body, landscape, and time.

With her research ‘Horsepower’, Martina Georgina followed an unexplained desire to get close to the local world of horses, from observing community horse races to volunteering at RMJ Horse Rescue. Absorbed in this unfamiliar ‘horse world’, her fieldwork became an embodied inquiry into care, proximity, and observation, opening an unexpected attunement within her inner world and practice. In response, Martina has been developing performative experimentations, a glimpse of which will be shared during the residency’s final event.

Variations On Emergence is a collaborative residency programme organised by the Malta Society of Arts and Arts Council Malta.

Nina Gerada is a sculptor whose work with clay is inspired by archaeology, geology, and the passage of time. Her sculptures often feature surfaces that are intentionally cracked, evoking weathered rock and ageing skin, and explore themes of community, place, memory, and embodiment.

Full Biography:

Working with the body, landscape, fossils and bones, Nina Gerada explores embodiment. The ageing, changing body is often likened to weathering landscapes. Geological time and mutable scales offer new perspectives – rendering lifetimes as precious and small. Themes of post-colonialism, invisible labor and societal moulds are explored. She searches for belonging in place and across generations.

Born in Malta in 1983, Gerada moved to London in 2002 where she studied Art, Design and Architecture. Her career has spanned different fields and she has worked at a multitude of scales; including Production Design for film, Urban Design, Architecture and Map Making, before focusing on sculpture. Gerada has recently moved back to Malta after 22 years overseas, she is currently artist in residence at the Malta Society of Arts where she is exploring embodiment; walking the perimeter of the islands, inserting her body into the landscape and learning traditional crafts.

Recent exhibitions include ‘Clay / Craft / Concept’ at the Malta Society of Arts (2024), The Malta Art Biennale (2024) ‘Debut: Inaugural Open’ at &Gallery in Edinburgh (2024), ‘So I Cannot Loose My Way’ at The Middle Room Gallery in Los Angeles (2024). She was selected to exhibit at the British Ceramics Biennial (2023) and at ‘Collect’ in Somerset House, London (in 2022 and 2023). Other exhibitions of note include: London Craft Week (2021), The Daphne Festival, London (2022) and “Cartography of Care’, Edinburgh (2022). Gerada’s work has been featured in Ceramics Monthly and Wired Magazine. In 2014 she received the award for Best Production Design at the Bridges International Film Festival for her work on the film ‘Simshar’.

Martina Georgina’s practice synthesises different mediums – including movement, text, voice, sculpture, and video – to create performance works that centre identity discourse as a social phenomenon. Her focus often draws from the female experience, interweaving real-time selfhood with fictional narratives.

Full Biography:

Born in Malta, Martina Georgina is an artist interested in drawing different mediums from movement, text, voice, sculpture and video which allow her to synthesise her performance works. In her current practice, MG continues to focus on identity discourse as a social phenomenon and the common obsessive behaviours of self expression. She continues to place her female experience at the centre, interweaving real time selfhood and the fictional.

MG has recently presented her graduation solo work titled Girl’s Phallacy in Malta at Rosa Kwir (2025) for which she first debuted the work at ARS Kunstillinak, Tallin (2021) as part of her Masters in Contemporary Performance Making at the Estonian Music and Theatre Academy in Estonia (2019 – 2021). The work explores the artist’s personal reflection on how the male-dominated car culture displays the female body and draws references from the voyeuristic, phallocentric imagery she grew up with when exposed to the passion- fuelled local car scene, a world introduced to her by her father.

MG has collaborated and performed in various projects and performances in the Baltics including Labi Kukkumine produced by STL in Tallinn (2021 and again in 2023), and Malleus Maleficarum in Riga (2023).

Since her return to Malta, MG has participated in Malta’s first contemporary art Biennale for which she presented ‘Ostra (2024) in collaboration with artist Romeo Roxman Gatt. Nowadays MG forms part of an artistic duo with RRG titled ‘metadramatik’ launched in 2025, with a focus on composing a confusion of fiction and non fiction stories through sound, music and performance.
