Sustain-Delay – CRACKLE & MEMORY featuring Kurt Buttigieg & Yasmin Kuymizakis

Following its Summer Break, Sustain-Delay returns with a concert in memory of our pasts through sound. In this unique live performance, experimental musician and memory monger Kurt Buttigieg joins Yasmin Kuymizakis, known otherwise as “JOON”, for an experimental set using personal archival content. Kurt Buttigieg will weave together their personal and collective memories through sound.

This event marks Yasmin Kuymizakis’ return to the experimental. Best known through her work as JOON, blending lush synths, hypnotic beats and layered vocals.

Kurt Buttigieg has “been involved in the long and short fringes of experimental music for years – gawking at it, making it, writing about it and organising gigs”. He is the artistic director of Sustain-Delay, founded and runs the Complex Holiday label. Time and memory, as well as the organic vs the inorganic are recurrent themes in his music.

For this concert, the themes of memory and time are reinterpreted through location as the foundation for artistic exploration, reflecting their individual and communal interactions with Malta – a place they both call home despite the long time spent living abroad or on the road. Space as sound, and sound as shared and divergent histories of home (wherever that may be).

This event forms part of the Malta Society of Arts’ Performing Arts Programme 2024 which is done in collaboration with Arts Council Malta.

Welcome to a year-long programme of adventurous music at the Malta Society of Arts, mixing electronic music with sounds further afield.

Bringing together musicians from near and far, in 2024, Sustain-Delay presents a year-long programme of acts experimenting with sound: from organic materials to the rhythmic sway of drum machines; mediaeval instruments to ethereal ambient music. Join us as we fill Palazzo De La Salle in Valletta with music previously unexplored by the Malta Society of Arts.

This project forms part of the Malta Society of Arts’ Performing Arts Programme 2024 which is done in collaboration with Arts Council Malta.

Kurt Buttigieg – Biography

Kurt Buttigieg is an “occasional artist and unwavering tinkerer”, with a perpetual organisational streak.

He read for a Master’s degree in Sound Art from the University of Barcelona and previously worked at the museum of the European Parliament in Brussels as curator for temporary and permanent exhibitions, and also planned spin-off museums in other EU capitals.

He organised numerous concerts, workshops and exhibitions in Malta and Belgium, as well as founding a small label called Complex Holiday documenting “inside-out ambient and sound art tomfoolery”. He is also a writer for several specialised magazines, including The Wire and New Noise.

As an artist and musician he released several works over that past twenty years, under his and other names, and created Malta’s first dedicated sound art installation in 1999.

A strong believer in community, Kurt is a committee member of the Banda Immakulata Kunċizzjoni (Ħamrun), Ħsus, Arsha Our and is active in other social, cultural and environmental projects.
