Sustain-Delay – Molom – Music from Stones and Plants

15 February | 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

As part of MSA x ACM Performing Arts Programme 2024 – Sustain-Delay series of music events

Molom – Music from Stones and Plants
Pick axes touching upon limestone, the subtle pulses of energy moving through the stems and leaves of flora echoing beneath Valletta. For its first session exploring sound, Sustain-Delay presents Italian Duo Molom (Milena Berta & Alessandro Pedretti). Molom will be performing using real-time sampling of stone working sounds such as the noise of chisels, pieces of marble that are detached from rough blocks and hammers being struck upon stone channelled through sound manipulation and electronic compositions.
This night will be opened by Alien Montesin who will be DJing the natural world and Naqara who will be sourcing sounds from plants and mixing them with sparse ambient and IDM.

[ About Sustain – Delay ]
Welcome to a year-long programme of adventurous music at the Malta Society of Arts, mixing electronic music with sounds further afield.
Bringing together musicians from near and far, in 2024, Sustain-Delay presents a year-long programme of acts experimenting with sound: from organic materials to the rhythmic sway of drum machines; mediaeval instruments to ethereal ambient music. Join us as we fill Palazzo De La Salle in Valletta with music previously unexplored by the Malta Society of Arts.
This project forms part of the Malta Society of Arts’ Performing Arts Programme 2024 and is supported by Arts Council Malta.

Kurt Buttigieg – Biography

Kurt Buttigieg is an “occasional artist and unwavering tinkerer”, with a perpetual organisational streak.

He read for a Master’s degree in Sound Art from the University of Barcelona and previously worked at the museum of the European Parliament in Brussels as curator for temporary and permanent exhibitions, and also planned spin-off museums in other EU capitals.

He organised numerous concerts, workshops and exhibitions in Malta and Belgium, as well as founding a small label called Complex Holiday documenting “inside-out ambient and sound art tomfoolery”. He is also a writer for several specialised magazines, including The Wire and New Noise.

As an artist and musician he released several works over that past twenty years, under his and other names, and created Malta’s first dedicated sound art installation in 1999.

A strong believer in community, Kurt is a committee member of the Banda Immakulata Kunċizzjoni (Ħamrun), Ħsus, Arsha Our and is active in other social, cultural and environmental projects.
