Qawl Milbus – A collaborative exhibition by Nadège Cassar and Alfie Gatt

Contemporary Fine Art and Jewellery inspired by Maltese Proverbs

Qawl Milbus is a collaborative exhibition by contemporary jewellery artist Nadege Cassar and artist and painter Alfie Gatt.

Following a successful collaboration funded by the Malta Crafts Foundation, the two artists have come together to create Qawl Milbus (literally, ‘worn proverbs’), an exhibition that reimagines Maltese proverbs through the intersection of contemporary jewellery and fine art.

Rooted in Maltese language and tradition, each work transforms a saying into a contemporary visual narrative. Some pieces incorporate jewellery directly within the artwork, while others are presented as sculptural wall pieces where handcrafted jewellery is seamlessly integrated into the composition. These works exist simultaneously as complete works of art and as wearable objects, allowing the jewellery to be carefully removed, worn, and returned to the artwork.

Qawl Milbus invites visitors to experience Maltese folklore from a fresh perspective, celebrating craftsmanship, storytelling, and cultural identity through innovative artistic expression.

Nadège Cassar – Artist Biography

Founded in 2005, Nadège.Renée is the creative practice of Maltese jewellery designer and maker Nadège Cassar. For over twenty years, she has been designing and handcrafting contemporary jewellery that balances traditional silversmithing with innovative design, creating pieces that are both distinctive and deeply personal.

Working primarily in sterling silver, with gold and palladium on request, Nadège creates limited-edition collections alongside bespoke commissions that often incorporate her clients’ own precious metals and gemstones. Whether transforming inherited jewellery into contemporary wearable pieces or completely remelting and redesigning sentimental materials, her work is driven by the belief that jewellery should carry both aesthetic and emotional value. Sustainability is an integral part of her practice, encouraging the reuse of existing materials while reducing waste through thoughtful craftsmanship.

Experimentation lies at the heart of her design process. She enjoys exploring the endless possibilities of metal texturing, contrasting surface finishes, and creating harmony between different materials. Her work is particularly recognised for transformable jewellery—pieces that can be altered, adapted, or worn in multiple ways to suit different occasions, styles, and personal preferences.

An advocate for preserving traditional craftsmanship, Nadège reinterprets historic jewellery techniques, such as filigree, through a contemporary design language. By combining time-honoured skills with modern aesthetics, she seeks to keep these traditions relevant while celebrating Malta’s rich silversmithing heritage.

Nadège graduated with a B.A. (Hons) in 3D Design and Interior Design, specialising in jewellery) from the MCAST Institute of Art and Design in 2010. Since then, she has exhibited her work both locally and internationally, participating in events including Malta Design Week, Malta Fashion Week, Runway Malta, Sharjah Heritage Days, Expo 2020 Dubai, DesignMT, Dubai, Import Shop Berlin, and numerous craft exhibitions. While in Berlin, she was invited to present her transformable jewellery at the Embassy of Malta.

Her work has received eight local awards recognising creativity, innovation, and craftsmanship, including the Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti for Inspiring Artisanship and Innovation through Collaboration. Today, she continues to create jewellery that combines technical excellence, contemporary design, and meaningful storytelling, with every piece handcrafted in her Malta-based workshop.

Alfie Gatt – Artist Biography

Alfie Gatt is a Maltese multidisciplinary artist whose practice centres on painting, illustration, and mixed-media work. Working primarily in oil and watercolour, he explores themes of memory, identity, belonging, and the emotional resonance of place. His work often draws from personal experiences, transforming familiar interiors, everyday objects, and fragments of Maltese culture into quiet visual narratives that blur the boundaries between reality and memory.

Influenced by both classical painting and contemporary figurative art, Alfie’s practice combines technical precision with subtle symbolism, inviting viewers to uncover stories beneath seemingly ordinary scenes. His work reflects an ongoing dialogue between craftsmanship and concept, where materiality becomes as significant as the imagery itself.

A graduate of the Institute of Art & Design in Malta, Alfie has exhibited in solo and collective exhibitions both locally and internationally. In 2019, he was awarded the Secret Art Prize at Curious Duke Gallery in London. He is also a recipient of the Premju Ġieħ l-Artiġjanat Malti, recognising his contribution to contemporary Maltese art.

His recent practice has expanded beyond the painted surface, incorporating handcrafted materials and sculptural elements that deepen the relationship between artwork, object, and viewer. Through this evolving approach, he continues to investigate how personal memory and cultural heritage can be reimagined through contemporary visual expression.
