Operatic Concert: Maltese-Bulgarian Music Legacy

On the occasion of the Liberation Day of Bulgaria

The Maltese-Bulgarian Circle is organising a classical vocal music concert to celebrate 3 March, the National Day of Bulgaria, commemorating the country’s liberation from Ottoman rule. The concert will take place here at the Malta Society of Arts on Tuesday 3 March 2026 at 7pm.

Now in its second edition, the concert brings together the highly acclaimed Maltese tenor Alan Sciberras and Bulgarian-born soprano Andriana Yordanova, who has made Malta her second home.

The concert will feature a special guest of international renown, Bulgarian baritone Kiril Manolov, whose distinguished career has taken him to leading opera houses worldwide. Described by Maestro Riccardo Muti as one of the finest Falstaffs of our time, Kiril Manolov will also appear on the stage of the Manoel Theatre in the title role of Falstaff in February–March 2026.

The singers will be accompanied on the piano by Bulgarian pianist Boryana Lambreva, renowned for her professionalism and expertise in both chamber and operatic repertoire. Her career includes a long-standing collaboration with legendary soprano Raina Kabaivanska and many years as Professor of Chamber Music at the National Music Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria. Both soprano Andriana Yordanova and baritone Kiril Manolov were among her former students.

The programme will consist of arias and duets from some of the most beloved operatic works, alongside Bulgarian and Maltese operatic gems.

The concert will celebrate the shared classical music heritage of Malta and Bulgaria. In 2024, Bulgaria marked the 110th anniversary of the birth of the world-renowned bass Boris Christov, who was warmly received by Maltese audiences in the 1970s, when he gave a recital at the Manoel Theatre.

In 2026, Malta and Bulgaria continue to strengthen their ties through enhanced travel connectivity, diplomatic relations, and business initiatives aimed at promoting trade, tourism, and cultural exchange, making this concert a timely celebration of cultural dialogue between the two countries.
