Born and educated in Scotland, Dorothy read music at Glasgow University before embarking on postgraduate study in performing arts education. She is a versatile musician, primarily as a piano accompanist and teacher, with a wide range of experience as a singer, organist, violinist, bassoonist and director across orchestral, choral, musical theatre and traditional music genres.
Dorothy’s teaching career spans primary, secondary, further, and higher education. She developed a specialized interest in instrumental teacher training, coaching students through Diploma examinations in performance and teaching in both classical and contemporary instruments. Her expertise led to significant contributions to national curriculum design and development.
As Head of Faculty for Performing Arts in Creative Industries at Northeast Scotland College, Dorothy established strategic partnerships with BBC Scotland, Creative Skillset Scotland, the Scottish Drama Training Network, and the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. These collaborations provided students with vocational roles in music, drama, television, and sound production, most notably during the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Her work culminated in an industry-partnered film festival that received an award for enterprise in collaborative educational practice. She led several international initiatives, including European Comenius projects in Finland and Germany.
An examiner for the London College of Music since 2003, Dorothy transitioned from her senior academic role in 2015 to focus on examination tours. She now contributes to the training of new examiners, maintaining high standards for musical assessment globally.
Outside of her professional commitments, Dorothy enjoys walking in the Scottish hills, and travels regularly to Canada to spend time with her family.
