Jiangnan Garden: A Place of Return
An exhibition of paintings by Yang Tang (唐漾)
Set inside the atmospheric stone vaults of our Basement, this exhibition invites visitors into a quiet world shaped by bridges, courtyards, scholar’s rocks and water towns – not as tourist scenes, but as an inner landscape where the mind can slow down and breathe.
This is not a show about “Chinese gardens”, but a show about a state of mind. Created between 2017–2020, these paintings reflect the artist’s search for stillness while living in fast-growing Shanghai. Today, shown in Malta, they echo something many of us recognise: the need for a place that restores clarity, presence, and balance.
Visitors will find a gentle path through the exhibition –
from the red gate at the threshold,
into pools, stones and garden spaces,
towards village edges and lived moments,
ending in a small room of images, scrolls and quiet encounters.
A simple hands-on corner will be available:
try water-brush calligraphy, stamp your own postcard with traditional seals, and explore objects from a Jiangnan scholar’s desk.
