Jazz Guitar Workshop
With Sandro Zerafa
Led by Maltese guitarist Sandro Zerafa, this workshop offers participants an opportunity to explore the language, technique, and musical thinking behind jazz guitar. Drawing on his experience as a performer, composer, and educator, Zerafa will guide participants through key elements of jazz playing, including phrasing, harmony, improvisation, accompaniment, rhythm, and interpretation.
The session will provide a practical introduction to how guitarists can approach jazz standards, original compositions, and ensemble contexts. Participants will be encouraged to think beyond technical execution and consider musical communication, listening, tone, and stylistic awareness as central parts of jazz performance.
This workshop forms part of the festival’s wider masterclass programme, complementing the different guitar styles represented across the concerts. It is aimed at guitarists who wish to strengthen their understanding of jazz vocabulary and develop a more confident, expressive approach to the instrument.
The Valletta Guitar festival is organised by Festivals Malta in collaboration with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and Pjazza Teatru Rjal and supported by the Ministry of Art, Culture and National Heritage. Sponsored by Coca-Cola, KM Malta Airlines, the French Embassy in Malta and VisitMalta.
