Introduction of Systemic-Dialogical Practices: A Focus on Practical Aspects of the Model – a lecture by Dr Paolo Bertrando
Dr Paolo Bertrando MD, PhD, is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist based in Milan, Italy. He initially graduated in medicine and specialized in psychiatry in Milan. During the 1980s he trained in Systemic Family Therapy under Luigi Boscolo and Gianfranco Cecchin, and initially used the Milan Approach when working with families that included a member diagnosed with schizophrenia. He later joined Boscolo and Cecchin’s Milan Centre for Family Therapy as a trainer (1993 – 2002). As Scientific Director of the Systemic-Dialogical School in Bergamo, he has been involved in developing a brand of systemic therapy closer to a dialogical position and practice.
Dr Bertrando’s vast professional experience includes: Director of the Episteme Association in Turin; Lecturer in psychodynamics of family relationships at the Vita-Salute University in Milan; Associate Editor for Italy of the British Journal of Family Therapy.
He has authored several scientific articles and books including The Times of Time (1993) and Systemic Therapy with Individuals (1996), both with Luigi Boscolo. One of his latest publications is The Dialogical Therapist (2007). His current interests are in the dynamics of systemic therapy, the broader implications of systemic theory, and the use of systemic individual therapy with specific populations. His continued interest concerns the dynamics of systemic therapy (both from a methodological and experimental point of view), the relationship between psychiatric and systemic thinking, and the dynamics of emotions according to a systemic view.
