Ġużè Camilleri Quintet
Anecdotes of Maltese Early Jazz
Concert No. 9 in this series of concerts curated by Karl Fiorini on the occasion of the Malta Society of Arts’ 100 years at Palazzo de La Salle celebrations
Our next 100 years at Palazzo de La Salle celebrations concert will be dedicated to Ġużè Camilleri’s research into Maltese Early Jazz.
Ġużè Camilleri has completed his Master’s degree in Ethnomusicology with a thesis focusing on George Caruana, aka Tony Carr, a Maltese drummer and percussionist with a remarkable career working with distinguished world-renowned artists.
This concert portrays an extract from this research thesis, together with musical arrangements and stories. The music to be performed consists of original compositions written by Maltese jazz pioneers, with particular focus on the first jazz trio in Malta, arranged for quintet by Dominic Galea.
The stories presented are excerpts from the same research project for an upcoming documentary entitled Strait Street to Abbey Road. Adapted for screen and directed by Cedric Vella, this feature film is based on Tony’s biography, researched and written by Ġużè Camilleri.
