Confluences – A collaborative exhibition by Giovanna Brogna Sonnino and Fabio Sgroi

Confluences brings together the artistic practices of Giovanna Brogna Sonnino and Fabio Sgroi, placing in dialogue two distinct approaches that, while evolving along different paths, share photography as a means of inquiry and the construction of meaning.

Giovanna Brogna Sonnino’s work develops through the reconfiguration of images, texts, and archival materials, reflecting on memory, identity, and the autobiographical dimension. Fabio Sgroi, through a rigorous photographic practice, explores the social and human landscape, revealing the transformations of reality with a gaze attentive to its tensions, margins, and processes of change.

Rather than presenting a contrast between opposing visual languages, the exhibition highlights the points of convergence between two complementary ways of seeing: one directed toward the inner landscape of memory, the other toward the historical and collective dimensions of lived experience. In both practices, the image becomes a site where the visible and the invisible, documentation and interpretation, fragmentation and recomposition intersect.

Confluences invites visitors to engage with a space in which images, experiences, and narratives converge, offering a shared reflection on photography’s capacity to question reality and generate new forms of knowledge.

Giovanna Brogna Sonnino – Artist Biography

Giovanna Brogna/Sonnino is an artist with a broad cultural horizon, whose artistic experimentation ranges across various media including writing, photography, phototextuality, moving images, visual poetry, collage, and installation. The archival process is the focus of Giovanna Brogna/Sonnino’s irreverent and intimate projects, which work with the extraction of pre-existing images. Fundamental to this is the role played by her house-archive in Catania (where she has lived and worked since 2003), a contemporary reinterpretation of the Wunderkammer, where cross-disciplinary and methodological approaches converge, and where the drive to assemble a personal collection of memories—ephemeral yet eternal—takes on macroscopic dimensions.
