Body & Vessel – An exhibition by Rebecca Bonaci & Thiss Clay

The exhibition celebrates the 10th year anniversary of tattoo artist Rebecca Bonaci. Titled ‘Body & Vessel’, it will showcase Bonaci’s evolution as an artist through a collaboration with Thiss Clay, through tattoo flash designs on ceramic pieces.

Additionally, the event will feature the launch of a publication that compiles a selection of Bonaci’s tattoo flash from the past decade.

In recent years, both contemporary tattooing and ceramics have gained significant recognition as art forms within the broader artistic community. Tattoos, once seen primarily as body modifications, have evolved into intricate expressions of personal narratives and cultural identity. Artists are now pushing creative boundaries, employing innovative techniques and diverse styles to craft designs that resonate deeply with individuals and communities.

Similarly, ceramics have transcended their utilitarian roots to become expressive sculptures that explore texture, form, and colour. The intersection of these two art forms reflects a shift in artistic perception, as both tattoos and ceramics challenge traditional notions of permanence and the role of the artist. These mediums invite interaction, blurring the lines between creator and audience, as well as between fine art and craft. As collectors and enthusiasts increasingly appreciate the craftsmanship and creativity behind each piece, contemporary tattoos and ceramics continue to affirm their place in the art world, enriching cultural discourse and expanding the boundaries of artistic expression.

This exhibition aims to merge the rich traditions of tattooing with the tactile and visual dimensions of ceramics, creating a dialogue between these two mediums. Visitors will be encouraged to navigate the space, reflecting on their own perceptions of beauty, permanence, and the stories these works convey. Hosting the exhibition at the Malta Society of Arts lends further credibility, positioning ceramics and tattooing within the context of contemporary fine art.

REBECCA BONACI – ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Maltese artist Rebecca Bonaci graduated with a B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art in 2014, after which she pursued a career in tattooing and the visual arts.

With a decade of experience specialising in black and grey linework and dot work, Bonaci has gained recognition in the tattooing industry, earning prizes at conventions and working as a guest artist in international tattoo studios. Bonaci has collaborated with a diverse clientele. Her illustrations have been featured on various apparel, in collaborations, and in local and international publications, among them: Money Magazine (Malta), The Bike Shed Apparel (UK, US), Lowbrow Customs (US), Luke Azzopardi (Malta), Von Peach (Switzerland), City of Art, Decadence, Now (Malta), MCOI 2023 (Malta), Thiss Clay collaboration (2023), Songs of Motherhood (2024), and Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti (2024).

Aside from her tattoo practice, Bonaci is also a visual artist. Her paintings, inspired mainly by the Maltese landscape and female figures, reflect her deep connection to nature, aiming to capture the essence of the land in a way that is both ancient and timeless. Her work serves as a visual representation of the phase she is currently experiencing in her life, as she reflects on her thoughts, emotions, and experiences at a particular moment in time. Bonaci strives to create art that bridges past and present, shaping a stillness in time.

In her first solo show, Ġuf, held at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta, Malta, Bonaci focused on a body of work that celebrates contemporary motherhood from her personal perspective as a creative mother. Bonaci was also featured in the Malta Biennale 2024, where her painting Ġenna tal-art was part of the Matri-archive of the Mediterranean collection at the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta.

THISS – ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

THISS, specifically This Here is Sofia’s Shop, is a creative partnership between Sofia Kuzmenko and Matthew Mamo, former interior and graphic designers, respectively.

Their ceramics practice was born from a shared curiosity and a mutual desire to apply the skills learned during their previous creative endeavours in a new context, rediscovering a sense of creative agency in the process.

These aspirations led THISS to collaborate with other like-minded creatives on several collections, some of which are featured in this exhibition. These works represent a cross-section of the studio’s practice, showcasing its versatile approach.
