Bible of the Cello – Bach’s Cello Suites

A cello concert by Chris Pidcock

An hour of pure relaxation, taking you on a journey of calmness, comfort and love.

Bach’s music is like a wave of emotion: a journey straight to the heart.
Prepare to be touched by some of the most poetic music of the baroque era, played by an international cellist.

The Australian cellist of Maltese descent Chris Pidcock has been performing for 30+ years throughout Australasia/Europe.

The performance of Bach’s music takes up a central place in his career. Chris plays Bach on a cello with raw gut strings, giving the music a truly soulful sound. Chris allows history to speak as he weaves improvisation between the movements of these suites, bringing his own unique take on these beloved works.

His concerts with Bach’s music usually sell out weeks or even months in advance. So don’t wait too long to get your tickets!

Programme:

Cello Suite 1 in G major BWV 1007 – J.S Bach

Cello Suite 3 in C major BWV 1009 – J.S Bach

Cello Suite 4 in E major BWV 1010 – J.S Bach

And improvisations by Chris Pidcock, Eric Dolphy and Horațiu Rădulescu

Christopher Pidcock, Cellist – Biography

Christopher Pidcock is a cellist who equally enjoys performing on historical and contemporary instruments, exploring composer and performer relationships, and expanding his own improvisational language.

In Australia, Chris plays with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and runs a concert series (Opus Now) that explores links between chamber music, world indigenous music, and avant-garde classical music. He has also just completed a doctorate that explores the expressive devices used by musicians in the early nineteenth century, culminating in several historically informed recordings of the Beethoven Cello Sonatas.

Overseas, Christopher recently gave a solo recital at the Sagrestia del Vasari, inside of the church of Saint Anna of Lombardi, in Naples, named after Giorgio Vasari’s exquisitely painted vault frescoes inside the sacristy.

Christopher’s love for Bach’s music and contemporary music led to the creation of his 2020 album “Immersed in Bach”. The album is a reflection on J.S Bach’s Cello Suite no. 4 in E-flat major and six contemporary compositions paired with each movement of the suite. It features music by Enno Poppe, Salvatore Sciarrino, Mark O’Connor, Mary Finsterer, Alex Pozniak, and the famous jazz-meme, “the lick”.
