An die Musik – A selection of staged arias and Lieder

Organised by Opera Nova Project

Join us at Malta Society of Arts this March for an evening of German music performed by the talented students of the Opera Nova Project. Accompanied by pianist Dr Christine Zerafa, the programme features Lieder and staged arias from composers such as Schubert, Strauss, and Weber.

Opera Nova Project

Malta and Gozo are home to an exceptional pool of upcoming classical singers. To nurture this talent, Gillian Zammit and Denise Mulholland have established the Opera Nova Project (ONP) – a training and performance programme designed to provide emerging artists with pre- and Conservatoire-level tuition. ONP’s mission is to equip the next generation with the skills and confidence needed to pursue a professional career in the performing arts, both locally and internationally.

During the winter months, students benefit from weekly lessons led by Malta’s most experienced tutors, complemented by international guest tutors from some of Europe’s leading academic and performance institutions. Recent guest tutors include Paul McNamara, Artistic Director of the Dutch National Opera Academy; Adrian Kelly, Artistic Director of the Young Artists Programme at Opera Zürich; and vocal coach and artists’ agent Hedwig Fassbender, among others.

ONP also hosts Summer International Masterclasses, welcoming both local and international participants. The inaugural residency featured Professor Janis Kelly, Chair of Vocal Performance, at the Royal College of Music in London. Concurrently, a Junior Academy for children aged 10 to 16 introduced young people to the world of opera in an engaging and accessible way.

The ONP Youth Choir was also formed this year, for young singers aged between 7 and 18.

At ONP, we believe our responsibility goes beyond training and supporting the artists of tomorrow – we are equally committed to inspiring a younger generation of audiences to discover and embrace the art form.
