Fragments of a Legacy: The Malta Society of Arts, 1923-2023
Featuring Masterworks of Maltese Modern Art.
The Malta Society of Arts has been able to call Palazzo de La Salle its home for precisely the past 100 years. Over this period of time the Society has been intimately involved with the development of the cultural field in Malta.
The Society has accumulated an archive and art collection which is testament to its involvement in the cultural world, in all its aspects. This exhibition proposes digging into the MSA permanent collection, its archive and other loans from private collections, in order to put the past 100 years of the Society’s artistic history on display, with the aim of reconsidering the past in light of the present and using moments of controversy, importance, strife or great merit as fragments in order to string together a refreshed understanding of the Society’s role today.
This exhibition, which is a Malta Society of Arts initiative, is part of the celebrations commemorating 100 years of the Malta Society of Arts at Palazzo de La Salle. The research in this exhibition is expanded in the edited volume Palazzo de La Salle, Genesis and Evolution (C. Miggiani and G. Zammit eds., Midsea Books, 2023).
Fragments of a Legacy will feature masterworks of Maltese modern art from the MSA collection, as well as archival material and work from contemporary artists.
