Double Bass

Tutor: Mr Sylvio Vella

Overview

Learning the double bass offers holistic developmental benefits that go beyond instrumental skill. Its physical demands cultivate posture, balance, and fine motor control, while its cognitive challenges strengthen reading, rhythm, and harmonic awareness. Musically, bassists gain deep understanding of voice leading, metre, and harmonic function, supporting broader analytical and compositional skills. The instrument’s size and role foster patience, discipline, and resilience, while frequent ensemble involvement builds confidence and authentic musical experience. Socially and emotionally, double bass study nurtures reliability, subtle leadership, and creative adaptability across classical, jazz, and contemporary settings.

Course Aims

This course aims to provide students with a holistic formation through double bass study—integrating physical literacy, cognitive control, musical understanding, and collaborative disposition. It seeks to nurture not only technically capable performers but also reflective, well-rounded musicians who can underpin and elevate collective music-making in varied contexts.

After submitting their application, applicants are advised to phone the courses coordinator on 21244400 and agree on a time slot for their lesson.
