Tutor: Glen Calleja

This bookbinding workshop offers an opportunity for hands-on guided learning in the art and craft of making books using traditional techniques.

This workshop is open to participants of all skill levels including beginners.  No prior experience is necessary – just an interest in learning a tactile, rewarding craft that connects contemporary creativity with centuries of tradition.  Whether you’re an artist, writer, or craft enthusiast, this workshop provides the foundation for creating durable, aesthetically pleasing books by hand.

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • explain the fundamentals of book structure, materials, and tools;
  • use time-honored methods such as folding, sewing, and casing-in;
  • describe the step-by-step process of bookbinding;
  • practice the practical skills required to complete the bookbinding process;
  • describe the history and evolution of bookbinding;
  • appreciate the beauty and function of handmade books; and
  • create a handmade book.

All essential tools and materials will be provided.
