The Malta Society of Arts Structure

The Malta Society of Arts (hereinafter referred to as MSA) is governed by a Statute approved by a resolution passed during a General Meeting of all Members of the MSA, called for this specific purpose. The Statute provides regulations approved by The Committee.

The Committee

The Committee is the highest internal organ of the MSA and is responsible for decision making on matters of policy, that of sanctioning the Mission Statement according to the Objectives outlined in the statute, as well as for the formulation of new strategies and new plans or projects from time to time.

The Committee is composed as follows :- President, 7 Committee Members(elected for a 3-year period), a Government Representative and the non voting Manager of the MSA.

The Committee meets as often as is necessary but not less than once every two months.

At the first meeting after an election the Committee appoints four officials, namely, the:

The President, Vice President, Hon Secretary, Hon Treasurer.

Administration

The day-to-day management of the MSA is carried out by :-

The Manager, 2 Executive Officers, Programmes & Initiatives Officer, Building Caretaker, Charwoman.

Arts Advisory Board

The arts advisory board meets twice a year to evaluate proposals submitted in application for the MSA exhibitions programme. The board is composed of experts and peers in the art world and is chaired by a representative of the Society.

Legal

The MSA’s foundation in Malta was given prominence through a notice in the Government Gazette dated 4 November 1852 under the signature of William H. Thorton Acting Principal Secretary of Government.

Act V of 2002 passed by the House of Representatives establishing the setting up of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, list the Society as a Government Entity the first shedule.

Financing

The MSA is a non-profit making entity. Its objective is :
to be a centre of excellence in visual arts, applied arts, and performing arts. To promote and encourage art appreciation by providing holistic education and encourage the production of professional and intellectual artistic work.

Government supports the MSA through the Ministry for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government which subsidy is paid quarterly. The MSA makes use of its premises on a freehold title granted by Government, and benefits also through other forms of assistance.

The MSA administers its financial matters internally and independently through the Committee.
