The first exhibition to grace the MSA Galleries in Valletta during 2021, shall be a solo show by Madeleine Gera, curated by Marika Azzopardi. The artist shall be showing a selection of some 22 works, oils on canvas, featuring interiors, landscapes and still life paintings. The new departure for Gera is her paintings of interiors, all inspired by pandemic lockdown months of seclusion and introspection, when she still worked productively albeit under very novel circumstances.

Madeleine Gera Profile

Madeleine Gera was born in Malta and also lived in Germany and Italy. She is a figurative painter and her focus of interest is the portrait. She was awarded a long term scholarship to study art in Florence in 1990 and returned to the city in 2002 -2010 and developed her skills as a portrait painter. Between 2006-2015 she ran her own studio, Atelier Madeleine Gera in Valletta, the capital city of Malta.

Painting for this artist is about recording and depicting her subject in specific light conditions and interpreting the subtle inflections and changes that occur when painting from life. Madeleine Gera has participated in several collective exhibitions in various European cities and has had numerous solo exhibitions in Malta.
She has travelled extensively throughout Europe and the USA with the scope of visiting collections that house Old Master painting. She has an MA in Philosophy of Art from the UoM She has recently participated in the Venice Architecture Biennale 2016 ‘Reporting from the Front’ with Architecture Project’s Cabinet of Curiosities.
